Strengthening Career Services: ACN’s Upskilling Event for Eastern African University Partners in Rwanda

In 2023, the Africa Careers Network (ACN) partnered with three new university partners in Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda to enhance career services and support for their scholars. Understanding these institutions’ unique challenges, ACN organized an upskilling event to provide practical tools and resources. Held in Rwanda from March 5th to 7th 2024, the event focused on bridging gaps in career counseling, funding for career center activities, employer engagement, and alumni interactions.

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Africa co-facilitated the event, showcasing its commitment to nurturing collaborative networks among African universities. The event’s highlight was the participation of ACN’s university partners in a job fair hosted by CMU Africa, offering them firsthand experience in engaging with potential employers. We express our sincere gratitude to CMU Africa for its invaluable support and for providing a platform for meaningful connections between scholars and employers.

Throughout the three-day event, participants from Egerton University, the University of Rwanda, the University of Gondar, CMU Africa, and ACN actively engaged in workshops, discussions, and networking sessions. By the event’s conclusion, each participating institution had developed a master list of employers, crafted a yearly plan for career development, and committed to collecting scholars’ feedback quarterly.

ACN’s upskilling event is a testament to the collaborative efforts to empower African universities and their scholars for success in the professional world. Through strategic partnerships and dedicated initiatives, ACN fosters lifelong learning and collaboration, ensuring a seamless transition from academia to the workforce.
